Maumelle Privacy Fences

Maumelle Privacy Fence Installation

A privacy fence here usually answers to two people: the family that wants the back yard to itself, and the HOA that wants the street to look the way the subdivision was planned. Delta Fence builds board-on-board and shadowbox runs that work for both, with American-sourced lumber, screws instead of staples, and every post set in concrete. Licensed, insured, and bonded.

Grade

Keeping a Long Run Straight Over Uneven Ground

A long privacy fence shows every mistake. On a short run nobody notices a post that sits a little proud or a top line that wanders, but stretch the fence across the back of a lot and the eye travels straight down it. On a job like new pine on black steel posts stretched along the back of a detached garage, what makes the line look right is posts that line up and a top edge that follows a decision instead of the dirt.

Very few back yards anywhere are dead level. Ground rises toward a house, dips where rainwater runs, or falls off toward the back of the lot. We string the whole line before digging, then decide section by section whether to step the fence down in even drops or let the boards follow the grade. Stepping keeps a crisp top edge. Following the grade keeps triangle gaps from opening at the bottom where a small dog could get out.

Posts go in concrete, and on a tall solid fence that matters more than anywhere else. A solid wall of boards gives a gust nothing to slip through, so every post has to hold its ground. The boards go on with screws, which stay tight as the wood swells and dries through the year.

Getting the HOA to Sign Off Before We Dig

Many Maumelle subdivisions have HOA covenants that spell out fence style, height, and placement, and privacy fences get the closest look because they are the biggest thing most people ever put on a lot. Some covenants want a particular style. Some limit how far forward the fence can come toward the street. Many also say which side of the fence faces out.

That last rule catches people off guard. On most privacy fences the rails show on one side and the smooth face shows on the other. Covenants that address it usually want the finished face turned toward the neighbor or the street, which leaves the rails facing your patio. If that bothers you, a shadowbox design solves it, because it looks the same from both yards.

So we ask for your covenants at the first visit, read the fence section with you, and draw the run to fit. You get the material, style, height, and a sketch of the line, which covers what an approval request typically asks for. Nothing gets ordered until the approval comes back. Our privacy fence page shows every style we build across Central Arkansas.

If the request comes back with changes, bring them straight to us. Swapping a style or pulling a section back from the street is a quick redraw at that stage. Once the fence is standing it turns into a much bigger job, and nobody wants to be the neighbor whose new fence is the subject of the next HOA meeting.

Shadowbox, Board-on-Board, and How Much Light Gets Through

Both are full-height privacy styles, and both show up in Maumelle back yards more than anything else we build. Board-on-board overlaps each picket over the edge of the one beside it. When the wood shrinks in a dry stretch, the overlap keeps the wall closed, so you never get the thin strips of daylight a butted fence opens up. Straight on or from an angle, all you see is wood.

Shadowbox alternates boards on opposite sides of the rails, with a space between neighboring boards on the same side. Looking straight at it, the fence reads as solid. From a sharp angle you can catch glimpses through, and air moves through the gaps, which takes some of the push a strong wind puts on the posts. It also looks finished from both yards, which settles the which-side-faces-out question before anyone asks it.

If you want the yard completely closed off, go board-on-board. If a breeze on the patio and a good face for the neighbors matter more than total cover, go shadowbox. We will look at the spot with you and say which one fits it, and if you would rather skip wood entirely, our vinyl fence page covers panels that never need stain.

Screening the Pool and the Back Patio

Pools and patios are where a privacy fence earns its keep. A full-height run lets you swim, grill, or sit out late without an audience from the next yard over, and it keeps the neighborhood kids from wandering toward the water when nobody is watching.

A pool enclosure carries its own set of rules, especially around gates, and we check what applies to your property before we design one. We hang pool gates to close and latch on their own, and we set the hinge post heavy enough that the gate still does that years from now instead of drifting open after one summer. We also keep the fence far enough from the pool deck that you are not scraping boards every time you skim leaves.

Patios are simpler, and sometimes a full perimeter is more than you need. A few sections of board-on-board or shadowbox set right where the neighbor’s upstairs window looks down can screen the part of the yard you actually use. We talk through that option before quoting the whole lot, because it may be all you were after. If a wood fence is where you are leaning, the wood fence page covers cedar and pine.

Corner Lots and the View From the Intersection

Corner lots come with two street sides and a harder fence question. Corner lots in Maumelle can have visibility requirements so drivers pulling up to the intersection can see traffic coming. A tall solid fence right at the corner blocks exactly that view, which is why the rules exist in the first place.

The answer is usually geometry. We pull the fence back from the corner, angle the run, or switch to a lower or more open style for the section nearest the intersection, then return to full height once the fence clears the sight area. Your HOA may have its own opinion on how far the fence comes toward either street, so we read both sets of rules side by side before drawing anything.

A corner lot also leaves the side yard more exposed than a middle lot does, and that is often exactly where people want privacy most. We plan the run so the patio gets its cover and the corner stays clear for drivers. For a side that only needs a boundary, black chain link is another option.

Deciding Where the Gates Go

Gate placement is easy to rush and annoying to live with for years. When we walk the yard, we ask about:

  • Where the trash cans live and how far you want to roll them to the curb
  • Whether a riding mower has to come through, and how wide its deck is
  • Which side of the house the kids and the dog use most
  • Whether a second gate on the far side would save a long walk around
  • Which way each gate swings, so it never opens into a slope or a flower bed

Every gate gets an upsized hinge post in concrete. Finished runs are in our fence gallery.

What Maumelle Homeowners Ask Before Fencing the Back Yard

Does a short patio screen still need HOA approval?

Usually, yes. Covenants that cover fences tend to cover any fence, even a few sections set beside a patio. A short screen that stays well back from the street and the corners is often a simpler request than a full perimeter, but check the fence section before counting on that.

Which side of the fence faces the neighbor?

When covenants address it, they usually want the finished face turned out toward the neighbor or the street, which puts the rails on your side. If that bothers you, shadowbox solves it, because it looks the same from both yards. We confirm your HOA’s rule before we build anything.

Is shadowbox private enough for a patio?

Straight on, yes. The alternating boards read as solid from where you sit. From a sharp angle a neighbor can catch glimpses through the spacing. If you want the patio fully closed off, board-on-board overlaps every picket and leaves no view through at any angle.

Can I put a privacy fence on a corner lot?

Usually, with some planning at the intersection end. Corner lots can have visibility requirements so drivers can see traffic. We pull the fence back, angle it, or use a lower or more open section near the corner, then return to full height once the run clears that area.

Why put steel posts under a wood privacy fence?

Steel posts do not rot where they meet the ground, and that is the spot a wood post usually gives out first. They still go in concrete, the rails fasten to them, and the pine boards go on with screws. Ask about them at the walkthrough if you are planning a long run.

Will my fence stay straight if the yard is not level?

Yes, as long as the line is planned before anyone digs. We string the full run, then step sections down where the ground drops or let the boards follow a gentle grade so no gaps open at the bottom. Posts set in concrete keep the line where we put it.

Pool Yards and Corner Lots Around Town

Most of the privacy work we take on around Maumelle lands in two kinds of yard. One is the back yard built around a pool or a patio, where the whole reason for the fence is sitting outside without an audience. The other is the corner lot, where the run has to screen an exposed side yard and still leave drivers a clear look at the intersection. If yours is either one, (501) 626-7024 is the number.

A privacy fence is easiest to live with when it was planned with the HOA’s fence section open beside the sketch.
