The post depth is the part of a privacy fence you never see and the part that decides whether it lasts. We dig every post hole below the frost line so the winter ground swell on the north bank cannot heave a post and tilt the run, then bed each post in a proper concrete footing wide enough to resist the lever action of a tall panel in the wind. On the most exposed lots out toward Crystal Hill and the open ground north of the city, we set the corner and end posts heavier still, because those are the posts a wind load works on hardest.
